What is Certificate of Single Status in Malaysia
Certificate of Single Status in Malaysia is also known as ‘Surat Pengesahan Taraf Perkahwinan’ (in Bahasa Malaysia). This document is known in foreign countries as Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage.
This certificate is required for non-Muslim Malaysians intending to get married overseas. This document will prove the marital status of the person to be single or unmarried and eligible to get married under the purpose of the Malaysian law.

Application of Single Status Certificate: Overview Process
- Fill up original form from JPN known as JPN KC09 (must obtain ORIGINAL form from the JPN).
- Submit the following documents:
- Original IC (of applicant)
- Valid Passport copy of your fiancé / fiancée
- Divorce certificate (if relevant)
- Prepare Statutory Declaration (Akuan Sumpah) to affirm marital status.
- Submit all the relevant documents to the JPN to be processed (duration of the application may take between 1-2 week(s) after submission). The JPN will confirm the date of collection.

Additional Process for Overseas Marriage
Once the single status certificate is obtained or issued by the JPN, you may want to translate the certificate to the language accepted by the country you intend to get married in.
For example, if you decide to get married in China, the certificate must be translated to Chinese or Mandarin and further to be legalised and endorsed by the embassy of China and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malaysia.
This is important to ensure that the certificate is valid and to be accepted for official usage in foreign countries outside Malaysia.
What You Need To Know About Single Status Certificate?
- The certificate is valid for 150 days from the date of issuance
- The certificate must be endorsed or legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia before you can use it overseas
Who Can Apply for Certificate of Single Status
Applicant must be above the age of 18 and must be a Malaysian citizen (for application of single status certificate).
You can apply personally or through a lawyer (or law firm) if you are residing overseas and not in Malaysia.
